Thanks for the write up. Agree with your comments. Worth starting with why I like the episode: we’ve done lots on how batteries work etc. All positive growth stories. But this gas transition will be difficult and if we get it wrong, have unnecessarily large costs for consumers and in the worst case, have that cost raised from power prices and slow down the transition (a consultation being looked at). Running through your list 1) yes agree, the main point here is the cost & that was in the episode. If the cost never gets low enough then the engineering of whether it is possible is irrelevant (or should be). 2) interestingly this was accepted. Seems they are mostly pushing for hydrogen clusters on industrial sites, and this is more logical. That’s a big change. 3) I’m not sold on hybrid boilers in homes, that’s too much CAPEX for very little use. But in an industrial setting it could be very useful to have power demand off for a few weeks. I expect that type of demand reduction would be paid for by the system operator. Check out the episode with Energynest on thermal storage where we discuss this. 4) exactly. This has the potential to be poorly managed and if we’re not think about cul-de-sac examples of taking out sections of the grid we’re going to pay too much for this. Interesting that regulation blocks this today. 5) yes, I expect nationalisation will be considered. The other angle I could see is to combine gas and power network owners, so the swapping of one for the other doesn’t cause a managed decline of one company. Bonus 6) I should have talked about primary energy too. Appreciate your comments, I’m keen to go back to these harder topics in future episodes.
